Aldehyde is a very reactive functional group. A SAM containing an aldehyde is an ideal platform for attachment of proteins, antibodies, antigens and other compounds that contain a nucleophilic group, such as an alcohol or amine.

It is important to protect aldehyde containing compounds from moisture and water, since that will cause the aldehyde functional group to be converted to a carboxylic acid.
